The People (About Us)

Lauren Christine Perez
Born a Californian and transformed into a world traveler, I spent a good portion of my middle and high school life out of the country. I've lived in California, North Carolina, Japan, England, Illinois, and now, Iowa (I've visited and vacationed at many more places than that). I like to think that my life of travel has shaped who I am today. I started dating Austin in November of 2012 after we became acquainted when we were collecting cans for our university's archery club. Once becoming fast friends (and an even faster couple), I soon learned of his dream and took it as my own.
A simple life of working with animals and plants in the mud and fresh air is something I look forward to as we trudge through our college days in a city. These small steps that we're starting the blog with make it all the more real to me. Some of my other hobbies (besides raising rabbits, a worm bin, and a garden) include teasing Austin for the silly things he occasionally does (just because I can), archery, cooking when we have the time, laughing even when we don't have the time, and making terrible puns.
While he might not say it in this blog, I'm convince Austin first fell in love with the idea of homesteading when he was a young boy watching Swiss Family Robinson (the 1960's film). Of course, much more influenced him but, I believe that movie planted the seed in his head from the start.

Austin Burke Smith
I was born and raised in Iowa City, IA and I've always had an affinity for animals and creating things with my hands, so I don't think it's a stretch to see how I'd want to become a farmer. In 2008 I began active duty with the US Army and served four years as a Psychological Operations Specialist on Fort Bragg, NC with two deployments to Afghanistan. While I'm very proud of my service and glad I did it, when I got out I discovered a drive to not be so thoroughly controlled by any entity or individual (not including my gracious Creator God). I realized that I wanted to be my own boss, to not have my circumstances or livelihood dictated by outside systems or people. Put it all together and you get an aspiring homesteader.
My writing in this blog will probably be longer and of a more informative nature than Lauren, but I'll try to keep it interesting and not let it be too dry so that you want to keep reading.
Some of my other interests besides the obvious include archery (Lauren and I met in the UNI archery club), movies, music, cooking, board games, guns (particularly mid to late 1800's models), a good whiskey, a good cigar, good company, and good conversation.
