The Dream

This blog is here because of a dream. My dream. It is not something that my mind fabricated in sleep or while I was zoning out in a college classroom. It is a motivation and a vision that slowly took shape as I left the Army and was made clear to me through a single word: homesteading. I've always enjoyed old-fashioned things, and have always been a fan of tradition and have believed that if it ain't broke, it needs no fixing. In today's world people have come to depend on outside sources for basic necessities that could easily be taken care of first-hand.
My dream is to shake free of those shackles of dependency, to build a family and a home that can stand and thrive by its own means. I want my future children to be raised on a piece of land where they can proudly say, "My father built this place from the ground up"; a place where they can learn to provide for themselves and for others, chase their dreams, and appreciate the world around them that God created.
To put it in some more concrete terms, I dream of buying a piece of land and building a house. From that house I will raise a family and a self-sufficient farm where we power our own home without a utility company and we produce our own food via gardens and livestock. We will live simply in a time where people elect to complicate their lives and live in excess.
I am not alone in this dream. As I write this, I have a fantastic companion who shares my enthusiasm for a simple life and who wishes to join me in my endeavors. Her name is Lauren, and we are building this dream step-by-step. The journey begins while attending the University of Northern Iowa, and we want to share our experiences with you as we plan and build a homestead inspired by the attitude and simplicity of the American Old West.
Whether you're interested in our processes, curious about homesteading/self-sufficiency, or a family member/lifelong friend who wants to watch two city-raised young people flounder in their attempts at farming, we want you to tag along. Better yet, we want to hear from you! Please just remember: this direction for our lives is still new to us and we're trying to figure it out as we go.
This blog is not designed to cover a short stretch of time. We intend to keep updating for a very long while as life and the eventual homestead progress, so please stick around. Time is the most precious thing one human being can give to another because it can never be reclaimed or earned back. So if you are investing some of your time to keep up with us and our lives, we sincerely appreciate it and you have our profound thanks. We will do our best to keep you interested and informed so that your time is not wasted. I promise it'll be quite a ride. So stay tuned, there's more to follow!

Sincerely,
Austin Burke Smith
