The Redneck Express 2.0 (Austin)

This one is just a quick one. Last week I built a new run for the rabbits, because the old one was made of poor quality materials and they were outgrowing it. They could barely do their happy, "I'm out of my cage!" jumps without running into a wall or the net, so it was time their playground expanded. I made it out of a couple spare boards from a wooden pallet and the backs/seats of some repurposed church pews my roommate randomly procured in June. He'd planned to make a bookshelf out of them, but ended up buying some from a friend and told me I could use them for whatever. This seemed like an appropriate project, although this new playground is significantly heavier than the first.

My Homestead Vision: Why Bison? (Austin)

If you're reading this, I'll assume you're somewhat interested in my homesteading endeavors; and if you're interested in my homesteading endeavors, I assume we've had this conversation before. But just in case, here is my explanation for why I have elected to aspire to ranching buffalo. Be warned: this is one of my longer posts.
When I tell people that I want to ranch bison, I get a lot of weird looks. Particularly from people with cattle experience. "Why not just raise cattle?" There are a few reasons and, while there are definitely some differences in approach, I feel like bison are more suitable to me and to my aspirations for the future.

My Homestead Vision: Composting Toilets (Austin)

If you see a post with the title My Homestead Vision, that means it'll be me showing you something that I intend to make a part of the stead and explaining it to you in some extent of detail so you can understand what I'm aiming for. The first edition of the series: toilets.

Log Home Inspiration (Austin)

This will just be a quick post, I promise. If you're wondering about the sudden stop in blog posts, it's because there hasn't been a whole lot of exciting news to report. I just got a part time job, school is about to start up, and the rabbits are finally showing signs of sexual maturity and breeding attempts. That's about it.
But I wanted to share this link because it gives a very good idea of what I envision as far as the log home I want to build the homestead from. Mine won't have the contrasting timber-framing or a second floor at all, but the color and cuts of the logs are pretty much exactly what I plan for and the interiors are gorgeous. Granted, the house in the article has only an outhouse for doing your necessaries, but don't worry; I'm not that determined to be 19th century authentic.
This house is a fully functioning homestead with gardens and livestock on 160 acres. And they built it themselves with no prior construction experience. It took them 30 years, but I am nonetheless inspired by it and know that it can be done much quicker. So without further ado, here is a preview of the type of home I wish my homestead to have.

What the Buck?! (Lauren)

Seriously guys... Seriously... What is going on with these rabbits? We were all prepared to get another doe and trying to figure out what to do with Fabio since George was obviously our dominant male who was doing all the mating but these rabbits seem to rival Austin in the ways of psychological trickery.
